Stay in Central Pattaya if you want to walk to everything, including the nightlife; choose Naklua or Wong Amat in the north, Pratumnak Hill in the middle or Jomtien in the south if you want a calmer base. Families usually do best in Jomtien or Wong Amat, couples on Pratumnak, and long-stay visitors in Jomtien.
Pattaya is not one beach but a string of neighborhoods along the coast, from Naklua in the north to the far end of Jomtien in the south. They feel very different. The few streets around Walking Street at the southern end of Pattaya Bay are what give the city its reputation; two kilometers away, on the hill or in the next bay, you can have quiet hotels, condos and family restaurants.
The good news is that all of these areas are linked by baht buses and Grab, so the choice is about what you want outside your door at night, not about being cut off. Our Pattaya city guide gives the background; this page is only about choosing a base.

Central Pattaya: Beach Road, Second Road and Walking Street
Central Pattaya is the strip between Beach Road along the sand and Second Road one block inland, from about North Pattaya Road down to the start of Walking Street. Here you are a short walk from the big shopping centers, most restaurants, the beach promenade and the boat pier for Koh Larn at Bali Hai. If this is your first time in Pattaya and you want everything on foot, this is the obvious base.
The downside is the same as the upside. The beach in front of the city is narrow and busy with deck chairs and boats, traffic is heavy, and many sois (side streets) between Beach Road and Second Road are lined with beer bars that stay open late. The further south you go, the more the nightlife takes over, until you reach Walking Street itself, which closes to traffic in the evening and turns into the city's red-light district.
If you choose Central Pattaya with children, pick a hotel in the northern half, near North Pattaya Road, and check the street on a map before you book. A hotel down a soi full of bars can look perfectly respectable in the listing photos. Pattaya Beach is one of the beaches where smoking on the sand is banned, which helps a little on the beach itself.
Naklua and Wong Amat: the quieter north
North of the Dolphin roundabout, where Beach Road ends, the city turns into Naklua, an older fishing district that is now mostly hotels, condos and Thai seafood restaurants. Wong Amat Beach is a curved bay on its western side, lined with larger resorts. It is noticeably calmer than Pattaya Beach, with less boat traffic and fewer vendors.
This is a good choice for families who want a resort pool and a beach without walking past bars, and for couples who want a quieter hotel but still a 10-minute ride to the center. The Sanctuary of Truth is at the end of Soi Naklua 12, and Terminal 21 is near the Dolphin roundabout.
The main drawback is that you need transport for almost everything outside your hotel. Naklua Road has its own baht bus route, but in the evening many people simply use Grab.
Pratumnak Hill: between the two bays
Pratumnak (also spelled Phra Tamnak) is the headland that separates Pattaya Bay from Jomtien. It is mainly residential: low-rise condos, boutique hotels and a few larger resorts, with small beaches such as Cozy Beach on the Pattaya side. There is a viewpoint on top of the hill over Pattaya Bay, and Walking Street is only a short ride down the hill, which means you can visit it and leave.
Couples and older travelers who want quiet evenings tend to like Pratumnak most. It is less suitable if you want a long beach in front of the hotel, and it has fewer cheap restaurants within walking distance than Jomtien or Central Pattaya. Check how steep the walk to the beach is before booking; some hotels sit high on the hill.
Jomtien: the long beach for families and long stays
Jomtien starts on the south side of the hill and runs for about 6 km. It has a wider beach than Central Pattaya, a long beach road with seafood restaurants and condos, and a slower pace in the evening. Many long-stay visitors and retirees choose Jomtien because condo rentals are plentiful and daily life is easy without a car. The northern end, Dongtan Beach, is the liveliest part; the southern stretch gets quieter the further you go.
Jomtien has its own bars, but nothing on the scale of Walking Street, and they are easy to avoid. For families it is often the best compromise: space on the beach, plenty of places to eat, and the city 10–15 minutes away by baht bus. Our detailed guide to Jomtien Beach covers the water, water sports and long stays in more depth.
Book a long stay in Jomtien by the month, not the night. Condo buildings in Jomtien and Pratumnak are often rented by the month, which usually works out far cheaper than a hotel for stays of four weeks or more. Our guide to renting a condo in Thailand explains deposits and the TM30 address report.

Our article Is Pattaya worth visiting for families? lists the attractions children enjoy; most of them are outside the center, so a quieter base costs you very little.
Getting around by baht bus
Baht buses are songthaew, the blue or white pickup trucks with two benches in the back. In Central Pattaya they run a one-way loop: south along Beach Road, inland along South Pattaya Road, north up Second Road and back to Beach Road along North Pattaya Road. You wave one down anywhere on the route, climb in, and press the buzzer on the roof when you want to get off. You pay the driver through the passenger window after you climb out.
Other baht buses link Pattaya with Jomtien over Pratumnak Hill, and with Naklua along Naklua Road. Fares on the fixed routes are a small flat amount per person, but there is no official fare table online and reports from 2026 disagree, so carry small notes and pay what the other passengers pay. If the bus is empty and the driver offers to take you somewhere off the route, that is a private charter: agree the price before you set off.
"Where are you going?" turns a shared baht bus into a private taxi. If you tell an empty baht bus your destination before you climb in, the driver may treat it as a charter and ask far more than the shared fare. Just get in on the route and press the buzzer when you arrive.
For trips across town at night, from the station or with luggage, Grab is the simplest choice. Bolt does not list Pattaya on its city list, as explained in our comparison of Bolt and Grab. Motorbike taxis are fast but carry the usual road risks; our scooter safety guide applies to passengers too.
Arriving from Bangkok or U-Tapao
Most visitors come by road from Bangkok. Buses arrive at the North Pattaya terminal, from where a Grab or baht bus takes you to any of the areas above. Our guide to traveling from Bangkok to Pattaya compares the bus, minivan and taxi. If you fly into U-Tapao airport, Jomtien is roughly 40 km away by road, so the southern areas are the quickest to reach.
For a family trip, plan the transfer to arrive in daylight. A car straight to a hotel in Jomtien or Wong Amat avoids carrying luggage through the center in the evening traffic.
Frequently asked questions
Is Jomtien or Central Pattaya better for families?
Jomtien is usually better. The beach is wider and calmer, the bars are fewer and easy to avoid, and the city center is only a short baht bus or Grab ride away. Wong Amat in the north is an equally good choice if you prefer a resort hotel.
How far is Walking Street from Jomtien?
Not far: Walking Street is at the southern end of Pattaya Bay, just on the other side of Pratumnak Hill from Jomtien. By baht bus or Grab the trip usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on traffic.
Is Pratumnak Hill a good place to stay?
Yes, if you want quiet. Pratumnak is mostly condos and smaller hotels on a headland between Pattaya and Jomtien, with small coves rather than a long beach. It suits couples and long stays; you will use Grab or baht buses more than in the center.
Does Bolt work in Pattaya?
Bolt's own list of Thai cities did not include Pattaya in October 2026. Grab covers Pattaya, and baht buses and motorbike taxis fill the gaps, so you will not be stuck without the app.
