Koh Racha Yai, also spelled Raya Yai, is a small island off the south coast of Phuket that most visitors see on a speedboat day trip for snorkeling, diving and a beach lunch. It has places to stay, so you can also spend a night or two once the day boats have left.
There are two Racha islands. "Yai" means big and "Noi" means small in Thai: Racha Yai is the one with the beaches, the bay where the boats tie up and the accommodation, while Racha Noi lies farther south. Both can be seen on a clear day from Promthep Cape, the viewpoint at Phuket's southern tip (TAT). Administratively, Racha Yai belongs to Rawai sub-district in Mueang Phuket district.
The island is popular enough that the government singled it out in August 2026 for new rules on tourist boats. This page covers what that means for a visitor, when the sea is calm enough to go, and what to look for in a boat. Our Phuket guide lists the other excursions from the island.

Racha Yai or Racha Noi: which island you will see
Almost every day trip, and every overnight stay, is on Racha Yai. TAT describes it simply: beaches, tour operators in Phuket town that sell trips, accommodation on the island, and a hilltop viewpoint on the south side of the bay that looks over the whole island. If you only want a swim, lunch and a few hours of snorkeling, Racha Yai is the trip.
Racha Noi is smaller and less visited. We found no official visitor information about it (no TAT page, no park notice), so we cannot tell you what is there or how good the reefs are today. If a dive trip includes Racha Noi, ask the dive center about the depth, the currents and the level of experience they expect before you book, and check that the trip matches your certification.
Patok Bay and the new boat rules of 2026
Most boats anchor or tie up in Ao Patok, the main bay of Racha Yai. On 4 August 2026, the national parks department and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) met with the Marine Department, the Department of Tourism and the maritime enforcement command to set standards for tourist boats, and Racha Yai was one of the first places named. DMCR had used technology to count the boats, their sizes, the number of visitors and their activities in Patok Bay. It found three problems: boats crowding the moorings, problems with buoys and boat traffic, and technical and safety issues.
The new standards (boat condition, waste, crew qualifications) are to start at Racha Yai, Phi Phi and the Surin Islands, then reach all 26 marine national parks. No final rules for Patok Bay had been published by late October 2026. For you, the practical point is that the bay can be busy at midday: swim only where the crew tells you to, and keep well away from boats that are moving.
Patok Bay fills up with boats around midday. The government's own survey found crowded moorings and boat-traffic problems in the bay. Stay inside the swimming area, wear a bright rash guard or snorkel vest, and never swim across the route that boats use to reach the beach.
Snorkeling and diving around Racha
Racha is sold mainly as a snorkeling and diving trip. A 2025 notice from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, on protecting coral from diving tourism, says all dive activities must be closely supervised, and sets a ratio of one supervisor to four tourists for scuba diving. If a dive operator puts eight divers in the water with one guide, ask why.
For snorkelers, the risks are the same as anywhere in the Andaman Sea: currents, boat traffic and tiredness. Our page on snorkeling safely in Thailand explains why life jackets matter for weaker swimmers. Divers should read our guide to dive safety and recompression chambers, which also covers flying after diving.
The ban on certain sunscreen ingredients applies inside marine national parks, and we found no source placing Racha inside one. The coral is just as sensitive here, though, so the products described on our sunscreen ban page are a good choice for any reef.
The speedboat from the south of Phuket
Racha day trips are sold by tour operators across Phuket, usually with a hotel pick-up and a speedboat from a pier on the south coast, most often Chalong. Ask which pier and what time the boat leaves when you book. The crossing time depends on the boat and the sea, and we found no official figure, so take the operator's estimate as a guide only.
We cover how a Thai speedboat works, where to sit, luggage and life jackets in our guide to speedboats in Thailand. Read it before you go; we do not repeat it here. If you get seasick, the open water south of Phuket can be rough, and our page on motion sickness explains what works.
Staying overnight on Racha Yai
TAT confirms that Racha Yai has accommodation. We could not verify which places are open in the 2026/27 season, so we name none.
- Book directly with the place you will stay and ask whether the boat transfer is included, and at what time it leaves Phuket.
- Ask what happens if the boat cannot sail because of the weather, and whether you pay for the extra night.
- Bring enough cash. We found no information on ATMs or card payments on the island, so do not count on either.
- Bring any medicine you need. Serious medical care is on Phuket, a boat ride away; check that your travel insurance covers evacuation and diving if you plan to dive.
When to go, and the monsoon swell
Racha is on the Andaman side, so it follows the Andaman seasons. TAT wrote on 20 October 2026 that the Andaman season had begun that month and that the dry season proper should settle in by December. From about May to October, the southwest monsoon sends swell onto this coast. Boats still run on many days in that period, but crossings are rougher, visibility can drop and trips are cancelled at short notice.
The Marine Department's safety measures say operators must not sail in strong wind and waves. If your boat is cancelled, that rule is working: rebook rather than look for a boat that will go anyway. For month-by-month weather across the country, see Thailand weather by month. Jellyfish are another reason to wear a rash guard in the wetter months; our jellyfish guide explains what to do after a sting.
The July 2018 Phoenix disaster, and what it means for you
On Thursday 5 July 2018, two tour boats and a jet ski capsized off Phuket. The Phoenix capsized and sank near Koh Hei (Coral Island) with 89 tourists on board: 42 were rescued and 47 died. The second boat, the Sereniga, sank off Koh Maithon (all 35 people were saved), and a jet ski capsized near Koh Racha, where both riders were rescued. Chalong Pier served as the rescue center, and the government announced a safety action plan on 17 July 2018 (TAT).
You will often read that Koh Racha was where the Phoenix went down. It was not. But it was a day-trip boat on the same waters, in July, and it is why the weather warnings deserve respect.
Four checks before a Racha boat leaves the pier. Count the life jackets and find one that fits you (and each child). Look for the sign showing how many passengers the boat may carry, and compare it with the people on board. Ask whether the trip will go ahead if the forecast is bad. Make sure the skipper has not been drinking; the Marine Department forbids it.
Racha is one of several islands you can reach from Phuket in a day. If you want a bigger, busier trip with national park scenery, compare it with the Phi Phi Islands. If you only want a beach, Phuket's own beaches compared may be enough.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a national park fee on Koh Racha?
We found none. Racha Yai does not appear on the national park fee lists, and the government's own 2026 notice treats Patok Bay as an area monitored by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, not a park. Ask your tour operator whether any local charge is included in the price (October 2026).
Was Koh Racha the site of the Phoenix boat disaster?
No. According to TAT, the Phoenix capsized and sank near Koh Hei (Coral Island) on 5 July 2018, and 47 people died. The only incident at Koh Racha that day was a jet ski that capsized; both riders were rescued.
Can you stay overnight on Koh Racha?
Yes. TAT confirms there is accommodation on Racha Yai. Book directly, confirm the boat transfer and its time, bring enough cash, and ask what happens if the sea is too rough for the return boat.
What is the difference between Racha Yai and Racha Noi?
Racha Yai is the larger island with Patok Bay, beaches and places to stay; almost all day trips go there. Racha Noi is smaller and farther south, and we found no official visitor information about it. Ask a dive center directly if a trip includes it.
When is the best time to visit Koh Racha?
From about November to April, when the Andaman Sea is usually calm. From May to October, the southwest monsoon brings swell, rougher crossings and short-notice cancellations, so leave a spare day in your plans.
