Koh Phangan Beyond Haad Rin: The Best Beaches and Areas

Thong Nai Pan, Bottle Beach, Haad Yao and the west coast, and the roads that link them.

Away from Haad Rin, Koh Phangan's best beaches are on the west coast (Haad Yao, Haad Salad and Srithanu, with sunsets over the sea), the north (Chaloklum and Bottle Beach) and the north-east (the two Thong Nai Pan bays). The catch is access: several of the prettiest bays sit at the end of steep roads or are easiest to reach by boat.

Koh Phangan's beaches are spread around a hilly island with one main road loop through the south and west and spurs out to the north and east. Driving times are short on the map and longer in practice. Choosing a beach is therefore mostly choosing how you want to spend your days, and how much you are willing to depend on taxis and boats.

This page compares the main areas outside Haad Rin. For how to get to the island and around it, see our Koh Phangan guide; for Haad Rin and the party, see the Full Moon Party guide.

Thong Nai Pan: two sheltered bays in the north-east

Thong Nai Pan is a pair of horseshoe bays, Thong Nai Pan Noi (the smaller, northern one) and Thong Nai Pan Yai, separated by a headland. They are the island's most polished beach area, with resorts, restaurants and a small village behind the sand. The bays face north-east, so they get morning sun and are sheltered from the west.

The road from Thong Sala crosses the hilly middle of the island. It is paved but has steep sections, and taxis charge accordingly. Some transfer services, including the ferry companies' hotel drop-offs, exclude Thong Nai Pan or charge extra for it, so check before you book a through ticket. Once you are there, many people stay put and use the resort or a boat for day trips.

Thong Nai Pan suits families and couples who want a classic beach holiday on Phangan without the party. It is the area least suited to travelers who want to explore the island daily on a budget.

Bottle Beach and Chaloklum on the north coast

Chaloklum is a working fishing village on a wide bay at the north of the island, reached by a paved road from Thong Sala. It has local restaurants, small guesthouses and a slower pace, and it is the base for boat taxis along the north coast.

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuad) is the next bay east, closed in by forested hills. It has historically had no proper road access, and the tracks towards it are steep and rough. Most people arrive by longtail boat taxi from Chaloklum. That isolation is the point: a handful of bungalow operations, a beach and very little else.

When the sea is rough, boat taxis may not run, and you will be glad of a few days' food money and a book. The north coast is more exposed to the northeast monsoon, which brings the Gulf islands' wettest weather from about October to December.

Haad Yao, Haad Salad and the west coast sunsets

The west coast faces the open Gulf, so the sun sets over the sea. Haad Yao (the name means "long beach") has resorts and bars along the sand. Haad Salad, just to the north, is a smaller, quieter cove.

These beaches are reached by the paved road up the west coast from Thong Sala, so getting around is easier than in the north-east. They suit couples and mid-range travelers who want a good beach, sunsets and a reasonable link to the rest of the island. Swimming conditions change with the tide and the season, so watch for flags and ask your hotel.

Srithanu: yoga on the west coast

Srithanu (also written Sri Thanu) is a village on the west coast between Thong Sala and Haad Yao. It is known as the island's yoga and wellness area, with yoga schools, retreats, health food cafés and guesthouses aimed at longer stays. Most people come for the classes and the community rather than for the beach itself.

If you are here for a course, base yourself within walking distance so you are not riding the coast road twice a day. The island guide linked at the top of this page has more on the wellness scene, and our guide to the 30-day visa exemption explains the limits on long stays.

Thong Sala and Ban Tai: the practical bases

Thong Sala is the island's main town and ferry pier, with banks, supermarkets and the most transport. The coast south-east of it towards Ban Tai and Ban Khai has long beaches lined with resorts and guesthouses. Because transport radiates out from the pier, these areas are the easiest to reach and leave without your own wheels.

For a Full Moon Party trip, Ban Tai is a sensible compromise: close enough to Haad Rin by taxi, far enough away to sleep on other nights. For long stays without a scooter, Thong Sala is the most practical place on the island.

The east coast: Haad Thian, Haad Yuan and Than Sadet

North of Haad Rin, the east coast has small coves backed by jungle: Haad Thian and Haad Yuan, and further north the Than Sadet area, named after the royal stream and waterfall in Than Sadet–Ko Pha-ngan National Park. These bays sit at the end of steep, rough tracks that are not suitable for a rented scooter. Boat taxis from Haad Rin are the usual way in.

Entry to the national park costs 100 baht for a foreign adult (October 2026), and in 2024 the Department of National Parks closed the waterfall area for the whole of November, the wettest month. A waterfall that looks gentle in March can be a torrent in the wet months.

On Phangan, "15 minutes by scooter" can mean a slope you cannot safely ride. The road into Haad Rin and several tracks to the north and east beaches are very steep, and descents on concrete or sand cause many accidents. If a track looks too steep, take a songthaew or a boat taxi; they exist because the roads are hard.

Moving between beaches without a scooter

Each area works differently. From the west coast and Thong Sala, songthaews and taxis cover most trips on the paved coast road. Thong Nai Pan is a taxi ride over the hills, so people based there tend to stay put. Bottle Beach and the east-coast coves depend on longtail boats, which do not run in rough seas. If you plan to see several areas, base yourself near Thong Sala and make day trips, rather than moving bags along steep roads.

Riders should know the rules before renting: helmets are compulsory, many rental bikes in tourist areas are unregistered, and insurers can refuse claims from riders without the right licence. Our guide to safe scooter riding in Thailand covers licences and helmets.

Which beaches are safest for swimming

The sheltered bays, such as Thong Nai Pan and the coves of the north coast in calm weather, are usually the gentlest places to swim, while open beaches take more wave action when the wind is onshore. None of this is guaranteed: check flags, ask at your hotel, and remember that most small bays have no lifeguard. Our guide to rip currents and beach flags explains the warning system.

From July to October, box jellyfish are a known risk in the waters around Phangan, Samui and Tao; see our jellyfish guide for first aid. For the season as a whole, our page on the best time for the Thai islands explains why the Gulf's rain peaks late in the year.

Combining Phangan with Samui and Tao

If you have not chosen an island yet, our guide to which Thai island is right for you compares them. Many people split a trip between a Phangan beach and one of Samui's beaches, then go north to Koh Tao for diving; see getting to Koh Tao for the boats.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best beach on Koh Phangan for families?

Thong Nai Pan Noi and Thong Nai Pan Yai in the north-east are the usual choice: sheltered bays, resorts and no party scene. The drawback is access over a steep road, so families who want to explore the island often choose the Thong Sala and Ban Tai area or the west coast instead.

How do you get to Bottle Beach on Koh Phangan?

Most visitors take a longtail boat taxi from Chaloklum on the north coast. The bay has historically had no proper road, and the tracks towards it are steep and rough, so do not try them on a rented scooter. Boats may not run when the sea is rough.

Where can you see the sunset on Koh Phangan?

On the west coast, which faces the open Gulf. Haad Yao, Haad Salad and the beaches around Srithanu all look west over the sea.

Do you need a scooter on Koh Phangan?

No. Songthaews and taxis connect the main areas, and boat taxis reach the remote bays. A scooter gives more freedom, but the island's steep roads make it a poor place for inexperienced riders, and your insurance may not cover you without the right licence.
