The cheapest way from Phuket International Airport to the west-coast beaches is the Phuket Smart Bus: 100 baht to any stop, about 80 minutes to Patong and around 1 hour 45 minutes to Kata (October 2026). The fastest is a car: the airport's limousine counter lists 800 baht to Patong and 1,000 baht to Kata, and Grab and Bolt both work in Phuket.
The airport is in the far north of the island, and the main west-coast beaches are a long way south, so even a car takes a good while in traffic. Your choice comes down to three questions: how much luggage you have, what time you land, and how far south you are going. This page answers those for Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai; the other beaches are compared in our guide to Phuket's beaches.

The Phuket Smart Bus: 100 baht to the west coast
The Smart Bus is a public bus that runs from the airport down the west coast: Cherngtalay, Surin Beach, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata and finally Rawai. Every stop costs the same 100 baht for a single ride, children under six ride free with a paying adult, and there is no separate tourist fare. You can pay on board by tapping a contactless Visa, Mastercard or JCB card (Apple Pay and Google Pay also work), by scanning the Thai QR code with a banking app, or in cash.
The bus stops at Exit 3. Airports of Thailand (AOT) lists one stop at Exit 3 on the ground floor of the main terminal and another at Entrance 3 of the domestic terminal, while the operator says its stop is outside the domestic terminal at Exit 3. Follow the "Smart Bus" and public transport signs when you come out; staff at the information counters can point the way.
The bus is the cheapest option by far, but it is slow, because it stops all along the coast. It suits travelers with a backpack or one suitcase who are staying near the main road. If your hotel is up a hill or at the far end of a beach, you will need a taxi or Grab from the bus stop anyway.
Smart Bus journey times to Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai
The timetable valid from 16 January 2026 has buses leaving the airport at 08:15, 09:00 and then every half hour until 22:00, followed by 22:40 and a last bus at 23:30. Scheduled journey times from the airport:
| Stop | Scheduled time from the airport | Fare |
|---|---|---|
| Surin Beach | about 45 minutes | ฿100 |
| Kamala (Big C) | about 1 hour | ฿100 |
| Patong (PEA stop) | about 1 hour 20 minutes | ฿100 |
| Karon (Karon Circle) | about 1 hour 30 minutes | ฿100 |
| Kata (Kata Night Plaza / Kata Palm) | about 1 hour 40–50 minutes | ฿100 |
| Rawai Beach | about 2 hours 10 minutes | ฿100 |
The operator notes that times are approximate and depend on traffic. Check the current timetable on the Phuket Smart Bus website before you fly, because it was last changed in January 2026 and may change again.
For the trip back to the airport, the first bus leaves Kata at 05:20 and Patong (Bangla police box) at 06:00, reaching the airport at 07:32. The last bus from Patong leaves at 20:20 and is due at the airport at 21:52. For an early-morning flight, that first bus is too late for anything before roughly 09:00, so book a car.
Airport limousines and taxis: fixed prices per beach
In the arrivals hall you will find counters selling cars at fixed prices. AOT's listing for the minibus-taxi limousine counter (open until midnight) gives these fares for a car, not per person:
| Destination | Limousine counter fare (AOT listing, October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Phuket Town | ฿650 |
| Patong Beach | ฿800 |
| Rawai Beach | ฿900 |
| Kata Beach | ฿1,000 |
The listing does not give a price for Karon; expect it to sit between Patong and Kata, and ask at the counter. Other counters sell similar services, so compare two or three before you pay. A family of four with luggage pays less per person by car than on the Smart Bus to Patong, and arrives far sooner.
Whether Phuket's airport taxis use the meter, and at what tariff, we could not confirm on an official page. Treat every price as fixed and agreed before you get in, and get it in writing on the counter ticket.
Agree the price before the car leaves the airport. Pay at a counter inside the terminal and keep the receipt.
Grab or Bolt from Phuket Airport
Grab and Bolt both list Phuket as a service area, so you can compare the two apps before you book. AOT says Grab rides use designated pick-up points at the airport; the app tells you where to go, so follow its instructions and the airport signs rather than walking out to the curb. Our comparison of Bolt and Grab in Thailand explains the differences between the apps; here, the point is simply to check both.
App prices change with demand, and we have not seen an official figure for airport-to-beach rides, so we do not print one. The app shows the price before you confirm. You will need mobile data on landing, which our article on SIM cards and eSIMs covers.
Arriving late at night
The last Smart Bus leaves the airport at 23:30. AOT lists the Smart Bus and limousine counter as closing at midnight or shortly before. After that, your options shrink to Grab or Bolt, if drivers are available, or a transfer arranged in advance.
Landing after 22:30? Book the transfer before you fly. Ask your hotel to arrange a pickup, or check that the hotel will hold your room for a late arrival. A delayed flight can easily push you past the last bus and the counters' closing time.
Have some baht in cash when you land. Thai ATMs typically charge foreign cards 250 baht per withdrawal, and KBank and SCB charge 350 baht for Mastercard (October 2026), so take out enough at once; our guide to using ATMs wisely explains how to keep fees down.
Going to Phuket Town or Old Town instead
For Phuket Town, take the orange Airport Bus, route 8411, from Exit 3 (turn left and follow the signs to the public transport parking area). It runs daily from 08:00 to 21:00; you pay on board in cash or by QR code, and the fare depends on distance. From the town bus terminal, the free Smart Bus "Dragon Line" loops through the old town every 30 minutes between 07:00 and 19:00. Our guide to Old Phuket Town covers the area.
Do not use the website printed on the airport's route 8411 page: in October 2026 it carried large amounts of unrelated online casino content.
Which option suits you
- Solo or a couple with light bags, staying near the main road: the Smart Bus, 100 baht each.
- Family or group with luggage: a limousine counter car or Grab; the fixed price is shared.
- Landing after about 22:30: a pre-booked transfer or Grab.
- Staying in Phuket Town: Airport Bus 8411.
Once you are settled, our Phuket guide covers the island as a whole, and the guide to renting a scooter in Phuket explains the risks if you plan to ride.
