The best time to visit Koh Lipe is from December to March, when the sea is calmest and the rain is lightest; January and February are the driest months. The full boat season, with direct services from Phuket, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Langkawi, runs from about mid-October to mid-May. From mid-May to mid-October only the speedboat from Pak Bara runs year-round, and the island goes quiet.

Koh Lipe is on the Andaman side of Thailand, so it follows the Andaman pattern: dry, sunny weather under the northeast monsoon in the first months of the year, and wind and rain from the west under the southwest monsoon in the middle of the year. But it sits much further south than Phuket, close to Malaysia, and its rainy season starts earlier in the spring and lasts later into the autumn than many visitors expect.

For the island in general, see our Koh Lipe overview. This page is about timing.

Month by month: rain and sea at a glance

There is no weather station on Koh Lipe itself. The nearest official station is Satun town on the mainland, roughly 80 km to the east, and its 30-year averages from the Thai Meteorological Department give a fair picture of the pattern, though rain on a small island can differ from the coast.

December to March: the best months

These are the months most people come for. The wind blows from the east, Koh Lipe's south- and west-facing beaches are sheltered, and the sea is usually flat and clear, which is what you want for snorkeling and for the long boat rides to the island. January and February are the driest of all.

The price for the good weather is crowds and high room rates, especially from mid-December to mid-January and around Chinese New Year (Saturday 6 February in 2027), when many visitors come from Malaysia and Singapore. Book your room and boat early for those dates. Our guide on where to stay on Koh Lipe covers the areas and booking ahead.

April and the start of the monsoon

April is the hottest and most humid time of year, and the Satun averages show the number of thunderstorm days peaking in April. The storms usually come in the afternoon and pass quickly, and the sea is often still calm in the mornings. All the long-distance boats still run, prices start to fall, and Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival on 13 to 15 April, falls in this month.

The southwest monsoon normally reaches the Andaman Sea around mid-May. The wind turns to the west, waves build on Pattaya Beach and Sunset Beach, and visibility on the reefs drops. That is the point at which the boat network shrinks.

Which boats run when

The boat schedule matters more than the weather when you plan. Operators publish their seasons on their own timetables, and they shift by a week or two from year to year, so treat these dates as a guide and check the timetable for your travel date. As of October 2026, one major operator, Bundhaya Speed Boat, lists these seasons:

RouteSeason listedApproximate time
Pak Bara – Koh LipeAll year1 hr 30 min
Langkawi (Kuah Jetty) – Koh Lipe15 Oct to mid-MayAbout 90 min (Malaysia is one hour ahead)
Koh Lanta – Koh Lipe15 Oct or 1 Nov to MayAbout 3 hr
Phi Phi – Koh Lipe15 Oct or 1 Nov to MayAbout 4 hr
Phuket (Rassada) – Koh Lipe15 Oct or 1 Nov to May5 to 5.5 hr

Tigerline, another long-established operator, gives similar figures: about 90 minutes between Koh Lipe and Langkawi, and four to five hours from Phuket. It also notes that some Langkawi connections require an overnight stop on Koh Lipe. Our older guide on how to travel to Koh Lipe explains the route via Hat Yai or Trang to Pak Bara and the transfer at the floating pier, and the guide to 12Go.asia covers booking combined minivan and boat tickets.

The Langkawi boat does not run in the low season. If you plan to cross between Malaysia and Koh Lipe between late May and mid-October, check the operators' timetables first; outside the season you will have to go overland via Satun or Hat Yai instead.

Even inside the season, boats are cancelled on rough days. Leave a spare day before an international flight, especially at the start and end of the season.

Mid-May to mid-October: the quiet months

The low season on Lipe is not a closed season. The village stays open, the Pak Bara speedboat keeps running, and some resorts offer their best prices of the year. It suits travelers who want empty beaches and do not mind rain or a choppy crossing.

But much is reduced. Inside Tarutao National Park, the park's own bungalows and campsites close from 16 May to 30 September, and reefs and islets close in stages; in 2024 the park closed Koh Lek, Koh Bissi, Koh Talang and the north and east of Koh Adang in June and July, and Koh Rawi, Koh Yang, the Chabang channel and others in August and September. Our snorkeling and diving guide lists the closures in detail. Some restaurants and smaller resorts close for weeks at a time, so confirm before you book.

September and October are the wettest months, and the sea on the exposed beaches can be rough enough to make swimming unsafe. On those days, use the sheltered Sunrise Beach; our comparison of Koh Lipe's beaches explains which side is calmer in which wind. Jellyfish are also more common in the rainy season; our guide to jellyfish in Thailand covers what to do.

How Lipe compares with the rest of Thailand

If your dates are fixed and Lipe is only one stop, compare it with the other islands. The Gulf islands, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, have a different pattern, with their wettest months from October to December, so a trip in July or August often works better there. Our guides to the best time for the Thai islands and Thailand's weather month by month compare the regions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Koh Lipe?

January and February are the driest months, with calm seas and clear water, followed by December and March. They are also the busiest and most expensive, so book early. April is still good in the mornings, but afternoon thunderstorms become more frequent.

Can you visit Koh Lipe in the rainy season?

Yes. The speedboat from Pak Bara runs all year and the village stays open. Expect rain, rougher crossings, fewer open businesses, closed areas in the national park and no direct boats from Phuket, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta or Langkawi for most of the period.

When does the Langkawi to Koh Lipe ferry run?

As of October 2026, operators list the Langkawi route from 15 October to about mid-May. Check the timetable for your date, because the start and end of the season can move by a week or two and boats are cancelled in bad weather.

Is October a good time to visit Koh Lipe?

October is the wettest month on the nearby mainland, and the boat season only restarts in the middle of the month. The second half of October can be pleasant and quiet, but November and especially December are more reliable for weather.
