Where to Stay on Koh Lipe: Choosing a Beach and a Budget

Beachfront or Walking Street, budget or mid-range, peak dates and the monsoon.

On Koh Lipe you choose an area first and a hotel second. Pattaya Beach suits people who want easy swimming and evenings out, Sunrise Beach suits snorkelers, Sunset Beach suits people who want quiet, and the lanes around Walking Street are where the cheaper rooms are. Book early for the dry season, and check what is open if you travel in the monsoon.

The island is small enough to cross on foot in 15 to 20 minutes, so no choice cuts you off from anything. What changes is what you see when you open the door: sand and boats, a reef, a jungle path or a shop-lined lane. This page compares the areas rather than listing hotels. For the island in general, see our Koh Lipe guide.

Pattaya Beach: convenient and lively

Pattaya Beach is the south-facing bay where most boats land, so staying here means the shortest trip with your luggage on arrival day. The swimming is the easiest on the island, over a sandy bottom, and Walking Street starts at its eastern end. Many of Lipe's larger resorts are along this beach.

The trade-off is noise and activity. Longtail boats start early, the boat landing is busy in the morning and afternoon, and some beach bars play music late. If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room set back from the sand or at the quieter western end, and read recent guest reviews about noise before you book.

Sunrise Beach: for snorkelers and the view

Sunrise Beach faces east across a narrow channel to Koh Adang. Resorts here put you within a few steps of the island's best shore reef, at the southern end, and the morning light over Adang is the reason the beach got its name.

The reef that makes Sunrise Beach good for snorkeling also makes swimming less straightforward at low tide, when the coral is just below the surface. Our beach-by-beach comparison explains how the tide changes each beach, and our guide to snorkeling and diving around Koh Lipe covers the reefs. In the southwest monsoon, Sunrise Beach is on the sheltered side of the island, which makes it a sensible base if you travel between May and October.

Walking Street and the inland lanes: the budget base

Walking Street, the pedestrian lane between Pattaya Beach and Sunrise Beach, and the small lanes branching off it are where most hostels, guesthouses and simple bungalows are. You give up a sea view, but both main beaches are a few minutes' walk away, and restaurants, minimarts, laundries and dive shops are on your doorstep.

Expect noise from the street until late in the evening, and less breeze than on the coast, which makes air conditioning or at least a good fan worth paying for. Cheaper rooms on Lipe still cost more than the same standard on the mainland, because so much has to be brought in by boat; our sister site's page on Koh Lipe hotels and resorts reviews individual places if you want names.

Sunset Beach: the quiet corner

Sunset Beach, on the northwest side, has only a few places to stay, most of them simple bungalows among the trees. It is the choice for people who want to read, swim and watch the sunset, and who do not mind walking 10 to 15 minutes to Walking Street for dinner. Bring a flashlight for the paths after dark.

Because the beach faces west, it gets the wind and waves when the southwest monsoon arrives, from about May. In those months the sea in front of your bungalow can be rough, and you will probably swim at Sunrise Beach instead.

Ask how your luggage gets from the boat to your room. The bigger boats stop offshore, and the island has no taxis in the usual sense. Many resorts meet their guests on the beach; if yours does not, motorbike sidecar taxis carry people and bags across the island for a fixed fare.

Budget, mid-range or beachfront: what you get for the money

Prices on Koh Lipe follow the season more than on most islands. The highest rates are in the dry months from December to April, with peaks at Christmas and New Year and around Chinese New Year, which falls on Saturday 6 February in 2027 and brings many visitors from Malaysia and Singapore. Malaysian and Singaporean school holidays and long weekends also fill the island, because Lipe is close and easy to reach from Langkawi.

We do not print room prices here, because they change by the week. As a rule, beachfront rooms at Pattaya Beach and Sunrise Beach are the most expensive, rooms a few minutes inland cost noticeably less for the same standard, and hostel dorm beds are the cheapest option on the island. Many smaller places prefer cash or charge extra for cards; our guide to money and ATMs on Koh Lipe explains how to plan for that. For general budget advice, see Thailand on a budget.

Booking ahead for the peak season

For dates between mid-December and mid-January, and around Chinese New Year, book your room and your boat together and well in advance. Arriving without a room in peak season can mean a long, hot walk with your bags, and the cheapest places fill first. Check the cancellation terms, because a cancelled boat can leave you stuck on the mainland for a night, and leave a spare day before any onward flight.

When you check in, your accommodation will ask for your passport, as hotels must report foreign guests to immigration. Our article on why Thai hotels need your passport explains the rule.

Staying in the monsoon months

From about mid-May to mid-October, Koh Lipe is much quieter. The long-distance boats from Phuket, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Langkawi stop for most of this period, leaving the speedboat from Pak Bara as the year-round link. Inside Tarutao National Park, the park's own bungalows and campsites on Koh Adang and Koh Tarutao close from 16 May to 30 September (the dates in the park's 2024 notice; check the current one).

Many private businesses on Lipe also cut back or close for some weeks in the low season, but which ones changes every year, so there is no reliable list. Before booking, confirm directly that the resort will be open on your dates and that its restaurant is running. The reward is lower prices and a quiet island. Our guide to the best time to visit Koh Lipe goes through the months and the boat schedules, and our older guide covers the journey to Koh Lipe from Bangkok and the other islands.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay on Koh Lipe?

For most first-time visitors, Pattaya Beach or the southern part of Sunrise Beach, because both are a short walk from Walking Street and the boat landing. Snorkelers should choose Sunrise Beach, budget travelers the Walking Street lanes, and people who want quiet Sunset Beach.

Do I need to book accommodation on Koh Lipe in advance?

In the dry season, yes, especially from mid-December to mid-January and around Chinese New Year. In the low season you can often find rooms on arrival, but confirm in advance that your chosen place is open, because some businesses close for part of the monsoon.

Is Koh Lipe expensive?

It is more expensive than the Thai mainland for rooms, food and shopping, because almost everything arrives by boat. It is still possible to stay cheaply in a hostel or a simple bungalow inland, and prices drop in the low season.

Is Koh Lipe open in May?

Yes. The village, many resorts and the year-round speedboat from Pak Bara keep running in May. What changes is that long-distance boats and the Langkawi ferry stop around mid-May, the national park's own bungalows close, and the island becomes much quieter.
