The quickest way from Bangkok to Khao Lak is a flight to Phuket followed by a drive of about 77 km north. Khao Lak has no airport and no railway, so on land you choose between an overnight bus toward Takua Pa or a sleeper train to Surat Thani and then a road trip west past Khao Sok.

Khao Lak sits on the Andaman coast of Phang Nga province, far down the peninsula from Bangkok. Most visitors fly, because the plane plus the transfer takes half a day while every land route takes a night and part of the next day. The bus and train are for travelers who want to save money, avoid flying or combine the trip with a stop in Khao Sok. This page compares the three options from a Bangkok starting point; what happens after you land in Phuket is covered by our Khao Lak guide.

Flying to Phuket: the usual choice

Phuket is served many times a day from Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, and the flight is the fastest part of the trip. Thai AirAsia flies the route from Don Mueang and, since 1 October 2026, from Suvarnabhumi as well, so read the airport code on your ticket rather than the airline name. Our Bangkok to Phuket comparison lists the airlines on each airport, and our comparison of Bangkok's two airports helps you pick the one closer to your hotel.

The good news for Khao Lak is the airport's location. Phuket International is at the northern tip of the island, so you leave it heading straight for the mainland instead of crossing Phuket's traffic. The hub page explains the transfer options from the arrivals hall, from a pre-booked hotel car to the long-distance bus on Highway 4.

For travelers from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok is often an unnecessary stop: direct flights to Phuket make Khao Lak reachable in a day. Our page on flights to Thailand from Asia covers those routes. Baggage rules and ID checks on Thai domestic flights are explained in flying within Thailand.

The night bus from Sai Tai Mai to Takua Pa

There is no bus that names Khao Lak as its terminus on the Transport Co. (BKS) timetable we read. The useful service is the route from the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) to Phang Nga town that runs via Kapoe, Kuraburi, Takua Pa and Kapong. On BKS's e-ticket platform it showed one evening departure, taking about 14 hours to Phang Nga town, sold as a 32-seat VIP coach for 876 baht or a 24-seat VIP for 1,168 baht (checked for travel on Tuesday 20 October 2026).

Get off at Takua Pa, the old tin-mining town north of Khao Lak, not at the end of the line. After Takua Pa the route turns inland through Kapong, away from the coast. From Takua Pa, Khao Lak is roughly 30 km south on Highway 4; a taxi or a local ride covers it, and your hotel can usually arrange a pick-up if you tell them your arrival time.

A Phuket bus does not drop you in Khao Lak. The Bangkok–Phuket coaches listed on the same platform run via Thap Put and Phang Nga town, inland of Khao Lak's beaches. Buy a ticket that goes through Takua Pa, and confirm the stop with the conductor.

Departure times change and BKS's own website was unreachable from our tools, so check the current timetable in the BKS app, on its booking platform or at the terminal. Our long-distance bus guide explains the VIP classes and how to reach Sai Tai Mai, which lies west of the river.

Sleeper to Surat Thani, then west via Khao Sok

The rail route crosses the peninsula twice: the train runs down the Gulf side to Surat Thani, and the road takes you back west to the Andaman coast. It is the slowest option, but it turns the first leg into a night in a bed rather than a bus seat.

Southern sleepers leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat, not Hua Lamphong. According to seat61's 2026 timetable, night trains reach Surat Thani between about 01:11 and 07:50; train 85, leaving Bangkok at 19:50 and arriving at 06:23, is the most practical, because you arrive in daylight with the whole day for the road. Our guide to Thailand's night trains compares the berths, and the D-Ticket booking walkthrough shows how to buy the ticket. Check the fare when you book.

From Surat Thani, Route 401 runs west past the Khao Sok turn-off to Takua Pa, and Highway 4 then leads south to Khao Lak. Using the road distances in our guides, that is about 190 km: around 122 km to Khao Sok and 70 km more to Khao Lak, or roughly three hours of driving before waits and stops. Raja Ferry's bus network lists a "Khao Lak (McDonald's)" stop, and several operators sell vans from Surat Thani to Khao Sok, so a through ticket or a change at Khao Sok are both possible. We found no published public timetable for Surat Thani–Khao Lak, so ask at the operator's office when you arrive. Our minivan guide covers luggage space and booking.

Many travelers turn this into a two-stage trip and spend a night or two inland. The jungle, the lake and the transport from the park are covered in our Khao Sok guide.

Driving yourself from Phuket airport

A popular middle way is to fly to Phuket and pick up a rental car at the airport. The drive north over the Sarasin Bridge and up Highway 4 is straightforward, and a car makes day trips to Takua Pa and Khao Sok easy. Our page on renting a car in Thailand covers licenses and insurance, and our sister site's account of the drive from Phuket to Khao Lak and Khao Sok describes the road section by section. Driving all the way from Bangkok is a two-day road trip and makes sense only if you want stops on the way.

Which route to choose

The same choices apply in reverse for the return to Bangkok. If you also want to see Phuket itself, our Phuket guide is the place to start.

Can you take a train to Khao Lak?

Only part of the way. There is no railway on the Andaman coast here. The nearest station is Surat Thani, reached by overnight sleeper from Krung Thep Aphiwat, and from there you continue west by road past Khao Sok to Takua Pa and Khao Lak.
