Bangkok to Phuket: Flight, Overnight Bus or Train and Bus?

Flights, the night bus and the sleeper-plus-minivan route from Bangkok to Phuket compared.

Flying is by far the quickest way from Bangkok to Phuket, with a short hop south from either Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang. Phuket has no railway, so the ground options are an overnight bus of 14 hours or more, or a sleeper train to Surat Thani followed by a minivan of about four and a half hours.

Phuket lies far down the Andaman coast, and every land route crosses the peninsula through Surat Thani or Phang Nga. For most visitors with a week or two, a flight wins easily on time, and an early booking on a low-cost airline is often not much dearer than the bus. The train-and-van combination is the choice for people who enjoy rail travel or want to avoid flying, and the bus is the budget fallback. This page compares the three on the Bangkok–Phuket route only.

Flying: which Bangkok airport and which airline

Both Bangkok airports have frequent flights to Phuket International Airport (HKT). From Suvarnabhumi (BKK) the route is flown by Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Thai Vietjet and Thai AirAsia; from Don Mueang (DMK) by Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air, according to OAG schedule data published in 2025. Airlines change routes, so treat this list as a starting point and check the current timetable.

Thai AirAsia is the case that confuses people. It uses both airports. Don Mueang remains its main base, with up to 15 flights a day to Phuket from 1 October 2026, and from that date it also flies Suvarnabhumi–Phuket again, five times a day (TTR Weekly, quoting the airline). From Suvarnabhumi it serves only Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi. So read the airport on the booking confirmation, not just the airline.

The airport you choose should depend on where you start. If you are connecting from an international flight at Suvarnabhumi, a domestic flight from the same terminal avoids crossing Bangkok. From hotels around Chatuchak or Ari, Don Mueang is the shorter ride. Our explainer on Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang covers the difference, while baggage allowances, ID checks and the other carriers are covered in our overview of flying within Thailand.

Thai AirAsia to Phuket can leave from either Bangkok airport. Since 1 October 2026 the same airline flies the route from both Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi. Check BKK or DMK on the ticket before you order a taxi.

Landing is not the end of the trip: HKT sits at the northern tip of the island, a long way from Patong, Kata and Karon. Our page on Phuket Airport to the beaches compares the Smart Bus, the limousine counter and the apps for that last stretch.

Sleeper to Surat Thani, then a minivan

There is no railway on Phuket, so the rail route uses the Southern Line to Surat Thani and a road connection for the rest. It is slower than flying but turns the journey into one night on a sleeper, and you arrive with the whole day ahead. Seat61, a long-running rail travel guide, describes it as the comfortable alternative to both the bus and the plane.

Your sleeper starts at Krung Thep Aphiwat, Bangkok's main station since 2023; Hua Lamphong no longer handles these trains. A typical choice is train 85, which leaves at 19:50 and reaches Surat Thani at 06:23, with first- and second-class air-conditioned sleepers (seat61 timetable, October 2026). Several other evening trains also call at Surat Thani in the early hours, which is less useful unless you want to wait for the first van. Our guide to Krung Thep Aphiwat station explains the platforms and boarding, and Thailand's night trains helps you choose between first and second class and upper or lower berths.

Surat Thani's railway station is at Phun Phin, about 14 km from Surat Thani town. Phantip Travel, a long-established Surat Thani operator licensed by the Department of Land Transport, has an office across the road from the station. According to seat61, its staff take train passengers to the company's town office, from where air-conditioned minivans leave for Phuket every hour from 09:00 to 17:00. The ride takes about four and a half hours and ends at Phuket Bus Terminal 1, near Phuket Town. The fare is 300 baht one way (October 2026); large luggage or a hotel drop-off may cost extra.

The weak point is the gap between the train and the van. Trains on the Southern Line often run late, so seat61 suggests either buying the van ticket on arrival or leaving three to four hours between the two if you book ahead. Our page on Thai minivans covers luggage space and safety on vans like these.

Going back: Phuket to Bangkok by van and train

Northbound, the order is reversed. Phantip vans leave Phuket Bus Terminal 1 every hour from 07:00 to 15:00 for its Surat Thani town office, from which the company can arrange the 14 km trip to Phun Phin station. Evening sleepers include train 86, leaving Surat Thani at 19:31 and reaching Krung Thep Aphiwat at 06:10, and train 84, leaving at 20:23 and arriving at 07:05. Seat61 recommends the 11:00 or 12:00 van for train 86, or the 13:00 or 14:00 van for train 84; book the van a day ahead in this direction.

Booking the train

We do not print sleeper fares here: the railway's website was unreachable from abroad when we checked, and the fares published elsewhere differ by class, berth and source. Check the current price when you book. SRT sells most sleepers up to 30 days ahead, and its newest special express trains up to 90 days ahead, on the D-Ticket website and app and at stations; the call center is 1690. How to set up a D-Ticket account and pay is covered in our booking walkthrough. Lower berths and the days around Thai holidays sell out first.

The overnight bus

Coaches to Phuket depart from the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai), west of the river, and run mostly in the evening to arrive in the morning. Seat61 calls it a "gruelling" journey of 14 to 16 hours, and that matches what most travelers report. It costs the least and needs no planning, yet the night is spent upright in a seat, and the terminal is awkward to reach from central Bangkok.

If you go by bus, pick a Transport Co. (BKS) coach or one of its licensed partners, in a VIP class with fewer seats; avoid the cheap through-tickets sold on Khao San Road. We could not confirm current departure times and fares on the operator's site, so check them in the BKS app or at the terminal. Bus classes, terminals and booking channels are explained in our bus travel overview.

Driving yourself

Driving from Bangkok to Phuket is a long two-day trip for most people, south on Highway 4 and across to the Andaman coast. It is worth it mainly as a road trip with stops, at Hua Hin or Khao Sok for example. Licence, permit and insurance questions are answered in our car rental page.

Which option to choose

Plan around busy dates. Phuket's Vegetarian Festival runs from 10 to 18 October 2026, and flights and sleepers fill up around Christmas, New Year and Songkran. For everything once you arrive, start with our Phuket guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can you take a train from Bangkok to Phuket?

Not all the way. Phuket has no railway. The usual rail route is an overnight sleeper south to Surat Thani, then an air-conditioned minivan of about four and a half hours to Phuket Bus Terminal 1. It works well but takes most of a day and a night.

Which Bangkok airport has flights to Phuket?

Both. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) has flights by Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Thai Vietjet and Thai AirAsia; Don Mueang (DMK) has Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air. Thai AirAsia appears on both lists, so confirm which one your ticket names.

How many hours does the Bangkok–Phuket bus take?

Plan on about 14 to 16 hours on an overnight bus from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal. Choose a government or licensed VIP coach, which has fewer and wider seats, and confirm the departure time and fare with the operator when you book.

What does the Surat Thani–Phuket minivan cost?

Phantip Travel's van from its Surat Thani town office to Phuket Bus Terminal 1 costs 300 baht one way (October 2026), with possible extras for big bags or a hotel drop-off. Vans leave every hour from 09:00 to 17:00.
