Ordinary Thai bank branches typically open Monday to Friday from about 08:30 to 15:30, while many branches in shopping malls also open in the evening, at weekends and on public holidays (as of October 2026). Hours are set branch by branch, so check the bank's branch locator before you go.

There is no national timetable for bank opening hours in Thailand. Each bank publishes hours per branch, and the same bank can run a street branch that closes mid-afternoon and a mall branch a few kilometers away that is open on Sunday evening. The figures on this page are the common pattern, not a rule, and we do not give hours for any named branch.

Ordinary branches: a weekday, office-hours service

Branches on main roads, in business districts and in smaller towns usually follow office hours: open on weekdays from around 08:30 and closed by mid-afternoon, about 15:30, with no service at weekends. We could not find a Thai bank page that states this as a fixed rule, which is why we call it typical. A branch in a provincial town or a university may keep shorter hours.

For anything that needs a manager or paperwork, such as opening an account, go early on a weekday, not in the last hour. Our guide to opening a bank account in Thailand explains why a branch can say no and which documents to bring.

Mall branches: evenings, weekends and holidays

The useful exception for travelers is the mall branch. Bangkok Bank says its branches are in shopping malls, tourist centers, office buildings and universities as well as on main roads, and that "many of them have extended hours, with services available in the evening, weekends and public holidays". Other large banks also run branches in malls.

Mall branches typically open later in the morning than street branches and close in the early evening, but the hours are set branch by branch, so use the bank's locator rather than guessing. They are the place to go if you need a bank on a Saturday or during a long holiday weekend. Bangkok's big malls themselves open daily from 10:00 to 22:00, as our page on shop and mall opening hours shows; a bank branch inside keeps its own hours.

The branch locator beats any list. Kasikornbank, Krungthai, SCB and Bangkok Bank all publish hours per branch. Search for the mall or district you are in, and check whether the branch you find offers the service you need, since a small branch may handle only basic transactions.

ATMs and self-service machines

Cash machines are the part of a Thai bank that never closes. Bangkok Bank describes its self-service "express banking" areas as open 24 hours a day, and many ATMs stand outside branches, in malls and at convenience stores, so you rarely need a branch for cash.

The opening hours matter less than the fee. As of October 2026, KBank and SCB charge foreign cards 250 baht per withdrawal with Visa or UnionPay and 350 baht with Mastercard, on top of what your home bank charges. Our ATM fee calculator works out what that means for your trip, and the article on using Thai ATMs wisely covers safety at the machine.

What a traveler can do at a branch

Most visitors only need a bank branch for two things: exchanging cash and getting money when a card fails at the ATM. Banks exchange foreign cash at their counters, and several also run exchange booths in tourist areas and at airports.

If your foreign card works but the ATM will not cooperate, a credit card can be used for a cash advance at the counter. At SCB, a cash advance with a foreign Visa or Mastercard credit card at a branch terminal costs 180 baht per transaction under its fee schedule from September 2026; the same schedule says foreign debit and ATM cards cannot withdraw cash at branches. Bring your passport. Our guide to using cards in Thailand covers fees and pitfalls in shops.

Exchange booths: separate businesses with their own hours

Independent money changers are separate businesses with their own hours, and travelers often compare their rates with the banks'. SuperRich, the best-known name in Bangkok, is in fact two separate companies: SuperRich Thailand (green branding, head office on Ratchadamri Road) and SuperRich 1965 (orange). Both publish branch hours only through their websites' interactive maps, which we could not read, so we do not print them.

Where to change money and how to compare rates is covered in our article on exchanging money in Thailand. Check the hours of the specific booth before you cross the city, especially on a Sunday or a holiday.

Bank holidays: when branches close

Thai banks close on the financial-institution holidays set each year by the Bank of Thailand. The remaining ones in 2026 are Tuesday 13 October, Friday 16 October (Bangkok only, for the IMF and World Bank meetings), Friday 23 October, Monday 7 December, Thursday 10 December and Thursday 31 December. The full lists for 2026 and 2027 are on our Thai public holidays page.

Two details catch people out. Some days off for civil servants, such as Khao Phansa, are not bank holidays, so banks open while government offices close. And in Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Satun and Songkhla, bank branches also close for Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and Chinese New Year. Government offices keep their own hours, set out in our guide to government office hours, and post offices are covered on our post office hours page.

Frequently asked questions

Are Thai banks open on Saturday?

Most street branches are not, but many branches in shopping malls are. Bangkok Bank says many of its branches open in the evening, at weekends and on public holidays. Check the bank's branch locator for the mall you plan to visit.

What time do banks close in Thailand?

Ordinary branches typically close at about 15:30 on weekdays. Mall branches usually stay open into the early evening. No bank publishes a single closing time for all branches, so check the specific branch before you go.

Are banks open on Thai public holidays?

Ordinary branches close on the Bank of Thailand's financial-institution holidays, but some mall branches stay open, and ATMs work as usual. Not every public holiday is a bank holiday: Khao Phansa, for example, closes government offices but not banks.

Can I exchange money at a Thai bank as a tourist?

Yes. Thai banks exchange foreign cash at branches and at their own exchange booths, and you should bring your passport. Independent money changers set their own rates and hours, so compare before you change a large amount.
