Government Office Hours in Thailand: Lunch Breaks, Queue Tickets and Holidays

When Thai government offices open, pause for lunch and stop handing out queue tickets.

Thai government offices work "official days and hours": Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 16:30, closed on public holidays. Many close the counter from 12:00 to 13:00 for lunch, and offices with a ticket queue often stop issuing tickets well before closing time, at 15:30 at Bangkok immigration (as of October 2026).

That simple pattern covers most of the offices a foreign resident deals with: district offices for marriage and house registration, municipal registration offices, land offices and transport offices. The details that cost people a wasted trip are the lunch break, the early ticket cut-off and the extra holidays that appear at short notice.

Immigration offices are covered on their own pages, and holiday dates on our holidays page. This page explains the rhythm of the working day.

Thai term
wan lae wela ratchakan, "official days and hours"

The standard day: 08:30 to 16:30, Monday to Friday

When a Thai office says it is open "during official hours", it means Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 16:30, except public holidays. Local registration offices publish exactly that: Koh Samui Municipality's registration office gives "Monday – Friday (8.30–16.30 hrs.) (except official holidays)", and Hat Yai City Municipality uses the same hours in its notice on ID cards for foreigners. Immigration offices follow the same frame.

The Thai phrase you will see on notices and websites is วันและเวลาราชการ (wan lae wela ratchakan), "official days and hours". If a notice says a service is available only during those hours, it means weekdays, office time, no holidays.

The lunch break between 12:00 and 13:00

Several offices state a break from 12:00 to 13:00 in their published hours. Bangkok's Immigration Division 1 gives its hours as 08:30–12:00 and 13:00–16:30, and so does Phuket Provincial Immigration. Not every office closes every counter at lunch, but you should plan as if it does. A queue number called at 11:55 may not be served until after 13:00.

Arrive at 08:30, not at 11:00. A morning start gives you time to fix a missing copy and come back the same day. Arriving shortly before lunch can turn a short task into an afternoon.

Queue tickets stop before the doors close

Busy offices use numbered queue tickets, and the ticket machine or desk can close long before the office does. Bangkok immigration issues tickets from 08:30 to 15:30, an hour before its 16:30 closing; its One Stop Service for investors says the same, and adds that officers keep serving people already in the queue until 16:30. Our page on the Chaeng Watthana immigration office shows how that works in practice.

Other offices rarely publish a cut-off, so assume there may be one. If your errand has a deadline, such as the last day of your permission to stay, go in the morning and early in the week.

A closed office does not stop your deadline. If your extension or 90-day report falls due on a holiday or weekend, apply on an earlier working day. Our guide to overstaying explains the penalties.

Holidays and closures announced at short notice

Government offices close on public holidays. The Cabinet's list for civil servants is not quite the same as the Bank of Thailand's list for banks, and it can include extra days; our page on Thai public holidays has both lists and the substitution rule for holidays that fall at weekends.

Special days off can also be declared at short notice, sometimes only for certain provinces. Offices often post their own closures online: Phuket immigration, for example, announced on its home page that it would close on 12 August 2026. Check the office's site or phone the day before.

District, land and transport offices

These are the offices most foreign residents visit outside immigration:

All of them are government offices and keep official hours as a rule. We could not read their own pages on queue cut-offs, lunch breaks or any evening and weekend services in October 2026, so check with the specific office before you go, especially for transfers or tests that take most of a day.

Banks and post offices keep different hours

Banks and Thailand Post are not government offices in this sense, and their hours differ. Many bank branches in shopping malls open in the evening and at weekends, while ordinary branches typically keep weekday hours; see our guide to bank opening hours. Post offices set hours office by office, and some large ones, such as the Bangkok General Post Office, open every day; our page on post office opening hours lists the main ones.

Frequently asked questions

What time do Thai government offices open?

At 08:30, Monday to Friday, and they close at 16:30. Many counters stop for lunch between 12:00 and 13:00. Offices are closed at weekends and on public holidays, including special holidays the Cabinet declares at short notice.

Do Thai government offices close for lunch?

Many do. Bangkok and Phuket immigration both publish their hours as 08:30–12:00 and 13:00–16:30. Plan your visit as if the counter closes at noon, and arrive early in the morning if you can.

Are any Thai government offices open on Saturday?

The official hours are Monday to Friday only, and the offices we checked are closed at weekends. Some services may be offered at other times locally, but we found no official page confirming this in October 2026, so ask the office.

Why did I not get a queue ticket before closing time?

Many busy offices stop issuing tickets before they close so that staff can serve everyone already waiting. At Bangkok immigration, tickets stop at 15:30, an hour before the 16:30 closing time.
