The slow boat is a two-day trip down the Mekong from Huay Xai in Laos, opposite the Thai town of Chiang Khong, to Luang Prabang, with a night in the village of Pakbeng halfway. You cross from Thailand on the Fourth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge by shuttle bus, get your Lao visa at the border or in advance, and board the boat the next morning.

The route ranks among the most famous overland journeys in Southeast Asia, and it is slow by design: two long days on a riverboat. For many travelers it is the most memorable way to leave northern Thailand. For others it is simply two uncomfortable days, and they are better off flying. This guide covers the border, the Lao paperwork, the two days on the river and the details that often go wrong.

The facts on this route come from two kinds of source, and we say which is which. Visa and safety rules come from the Lao and UK governments. Boat times and fares come from traveler-updated guides, because there is no official operator site, so treat them as a starting point and confirm them in Huay Xai.

Getting to Chiang Khong

Chiang Khong is a small riverside town in Chiang Rai province, and most people reach it from the city of Chiang Rai. Buses and minivans run from Chiang Rai's bus terminal to Chiang Khong; check the day's times at the terminal, as we could not read a current official timetable. If you are starting in Chiang Mai, the first leg is the trip to Chiang Rai, covered in our comparison of buses and minivans between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, and our Chiang Rai guide has the city itself.

Plan to sleep in Chiang Khong or arrive early. The Thai side of the border is open 06:00–22:00, but the shuttle across the bridge runs only 08:00–18:00 according to Wikivoyage, and you want to reach Huay Xai with time to arrange the boat. Allow for a tuk-tuk or taxi from town to the checkpoint.

Agencies in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai also sell package tickets that bundle the road transfer, the border and the boat. A package saves effort but does not change the rules at the border: you still deal with immigration yourself. We do not recommend a specific agency.

Crossing Friendship Bridge IV

The crossing has three steps. First, Thai exit immigration stamps you out. Then you board the shuttle bus across the Mekong; walking or cycling over the bridge is not allowed. Wikivoyage lists the fare as about 20 baht, rising to 25 baht at weekends and after 16:00 and 40 baht after 18:00, and says the bus leaves when it is reasonably full, which can mean waiting up to an hour. Finally, Lao immigration processes you at the other end of the bridge.

From the Lao checkpoint to Huay Xai town is a songthaew (shared pickup) ride; Wikivoyage reported about 50,000 kip or 100 baht per person in November 2022. Sources disagree on the distance between the bridge and town, so do not plan to walk it with luggage.

Huay Xai is in Bokeo, where the UK asks for extreme caution. The FCDO's Laos advice (updated 13 August 2026) reports small-scale clashes in isolated areas along the Laos–Thailand border and asks travelers to be extremely cautious in Bokeo Province, especially near the Myanmar and Thai borders and the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone, where armed groups run employment scams and drug trafficking. Read the current advice before you go and stick to the normal tourist route.

The Lao visa and border paperwork

Laos sets its own rules, and most Western passports need a visa. You have two choices at this crossing.

A few nationalities, including some from ASEAN, need no Lao visa at all; the Lao portal lets you check yours. The Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) is required at Friendship Bridge I in Vientiane, but the UK government does not list Bridge IV among the checkpoints where it applies (October 2026). If you will also pass Bridge I or a Lao airport later, file it there.

A Lao tourist visa now gives 30 days from arrival. The UK says it can be extended twice inside Laos for up to 60 extra days, which matters if you plan to travel on through the country.

Day one: Huay Xai to Pakbeng

The boat leaves from the slow-boat pier in Huay Xai. According to Wikivoyage, departure moved from 11:00 to 09:00 in December 2024, but several 2026 travel blogs still give 11:00 or 11:30. Do not guess: ask at your guesthouse or at the ticket office the evening before, and be at the pier early.

The first day ends in Pakbeng, a small village on the river. There is no included accommodation: you find your own room on arrival or book one in advance. Everyone on the boat arrives at the same moment and wants a bed, so booking ahead saves a scramble.

Bring food and water for the day, something soft to sit on, a warm layer for the morning, and a charged power bank. Pack what you need for the night in a small bag so your main luggage can stay closed.

Day two: Pakbeng to Luang Prabang

Day two uses a different boat and a different crew. You board again in the morning in Pakbeng and arrive in Luang Prabang later the same day; how late depends on the river and the boat. Arrange your first night in Luang Prabang before you set off.

Keep your ticket from Huay Xai. A through ticket covers both days, and Wikivoyage reports a scam in which travelers who cannot show their ticket on the second morning are made to buy another.

Kip prices change quickly, and 2026 travel blogs quote higher boat fares than the table, so budget generously. Carry Lao kip, some US dollars for the visa and some baht, and do not count on paying by card on the river. Before you leave Thailand, the tips on where to change money in Thailand help you get the dollars and baht you need.

Is the slow boat safe?

The route is used by many travelers every year, but the UK government is frank about river travel in Laos. It says travel on the Mekong can be dangerous because of changing water levels, strong currents and hidden obstacles, that there have been boat accidents, and that vessel safety standards vary widely. Its advice is to check that the boat carries life jackets and not to board an overcrowded vessel. The FCDO also warns that in the rainy season, floods and landslides can disrupt travel in Laos; see how the rainy season affects travel for the months involved on the Thai side.

Make sure your travel insurance policy includes Laos as well as Thailand.

Coming back to Thailand

Most people do not return the same way. From Luang Prabang, the Laos–China Railway runs south to Vientiane (Luang Prabang station is about 12 km from town), and from Vientiane a train takes you back over the river to Nong Khai and south to Bangkok. Our page on Nong Khai describes that crossing, and the Kunming to Bangkok rail guide explains the Lao railway, its stations and tickets.

Re-entering Thailand by land counts toward the limit on visa-exempt land entries (two per calendar year for most passports, as of October 2026), and every entry needs a new TDAC arrival card. The visa exemption guide explains the rule, and if you are thinking of using this trip to renew your stay, read our page on border runs first.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang?

Two days. The boat runs from Huay Xai to Pakbeng on the first day, you sleep in Pakbeng, and a second boat continues to Luang Prabang the next day. Both days are long, so plan nothing else for them.

Can you walk across the Friendship Bridge at Chiang Khong?

No. After Thai exit immigration you must take the shuttle bus across the Fourth Friendship Bridge; walking and cycling are not allowed. The bus runs during the day and leaves when it is reasonably full, so allow time for the wait.

Can I get a Lao visa on arrival at Chiang Khong?

Yes, for many nationalities. According to the UK government, single-entry visas are issued on arrival at numerous Lao checkpoints, and the Lao eVisa portal also lists Friendship Bridge IV as a port for eVisas. Bring a passport photo and US dollar notes.

What time does the slow boat leave Huay Xai?

Wikivoyage reported a 09:00 departure from December 2024, replacing the older 11:00 time, but some 2026 sources still give 11:00. Ask at your guesthouse or the pier the evening before and arrive early.

Do I need to book a room in Pakbeng?

The boat fare does not include accommodation, so you either book ahead or find a room on arrival. Every passenger on the boat arrives at the same time, so booking ahead is the calmer option in busy months.
